Overseas star David Hussey is targeting a one-day trophy with Nottinghamshire after signing a new two-year contract.

The 30-year-old Australian run-machine didn't have to think twice before agreeing to return to Trent Bridge and believes they can challenge for silverware on all fronts in 2008.

He said: "I would love to play at Lord's in a one-day final and that's one of my biggest goals for next season.

"Winning the Championship is still the biggest thing you can achieve in county cricket but it's been a long time since Notts lifted a one-day trophy, and it's something I and the rest of the squad want to change."

Hussey has scored more than 5,000 first-class runs in four seasons at Trent Bridge, averaging 65.06 with 19 hundreds.

In 2007 he smashed a career-best 275 against Essex, including 14 sixes - two short of equalling the world-record in a first-class innings set by fellow Australian Andrew Symonds for Gloucestershire against Glamorgan in 1995.

He also acted as stand-in captain at the start of the season when Stephen Fleming was on international duty with New Zealand, and is excited at the prospect of playing under new skipper Chris Read.

He said: "There were no doubts in my mind about coming back and it's a pretty exciting time for Notts with Chris as captain.

"I think he will help us to claim some much-warranted silverware and I'm confident we can challenge again for the Championship title."

Next year sees county cricket revert to one overseas player per side and Notts Director of Cricket Mick Newell had no hesitation in returning to the Australia A batsman.

He said: "Hussey has been a fantastic overseas player for Notts, has never let us down and if anything has got better and better.

"In 2007 he seemed to reach a new level of maturity in his performances and we are very keen to see that continue.

"He slid quite easily into the captaincy at the start of the season and is a senior and hugely respected figure in the dressing room."
